How to reach Leh -Ladakh

By Road:
The Jammu & Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation provides regular bus services from Srinagar to Leh, located at a distance of 700 km. In addition to this, travelers can also avail bus services of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation from Manali to Leh. It takes around 20 hours to reach Leh from Manali on road.

By Train:
There are no railway lines in the area.

By Air:
The Leh Airport provides regular return flights from Leh to other cities of the country including Jammu, Delhi, and Srinagar. One can take taxis from the Leh Airport to reach the town.

What is the best time to go to Leh – Ladakh?

Best time to visit Leh is between May to September every year. However, various festival take place between September to November in this area and hence many people also prefer this time to visit Leh Ladakh.

What are normal temperatures in Leh – Ladakh?

Weather in Leh region is unpredictable. In summers it can go as high as 35 degree Celsius, while in winters the it can down to 24 degrees Celsius below the freezing level.

Do you need separate permits to enter Leh – Ladakh?

Inner line permits are required to visit: Pangang Tso, Khardung La, Tso Moirri, Nubra Valley, Changthang.
Inner Line Permits are not required for Zanskar and Suru Valley. No permits are required to visit the local places near Leh town or Leh local sightseeing, places on Srinagar Leh Highway, places on Manali – Leh Highway.

Inner line permits are issued from DC office in Leh town. Timing of the Leh DC office are 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM, however the application forms needs to be submitted before 3 pm.

Self-attested photocopies of valid nationality proof, Photo-IDs are necessary to procure Inner Line Permits.

Besides permit application form, you need to write a request application letter addressing DC of Leh – Ladakh district for the approval of your permits. In the application, you need to express your interest to visit the places you wish to travel along with the dates you would be visiting these places in your Leh trip.
Validity of the inner line permits are 3 weeks for Indians and 1 week for foreigners. However, there is no limit on the number of times you enter a place in the valid period provided you have the permits with you for that place.

In order to get the permits for Hanle and Changthang or to go to Tso Moriri via Chusul – Nyoma route from Pangong Tso you need to mention all places enroute so that you are not sent back from any post. These places are: Man – Merak – Chusul – Tsaga – Loma – Nyoma and hanle

What kind of clothes should one carry?

Though in summers it is always advisable to carry some woolen clothes while traveling to Leh as weather change happens drastically fast in the region.

What is the kind of accommodation found in Leh Ladakh?

One can only get basic accommodation in the region. Sometimes also only tents are provided.
